Description

This Non-Alcoholic Spiced Hot Toddy is a warm, comforting beverage perfect for chilly days or soothing a sore throat. Infused with aromatic spices like cinnamon, ginger, and cloves, and sweetened naturally with honey and fresh lemon juice, it offers a delightful balance of warmth and zest without any alcohol.

Ingredients

Scale

Tea Base

  • 1 black tea bag or 2 teaspoons loose leaf black tea

Spices and Flavorings

  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1-inch piece of ginger root
  • ¼ teaspoon whole cloves

Liquids and Sweeteners

  • 1¼ cups water
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1-2 tablespoons honey

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tea: Place the black tea bag or loose leaf tea into a small teapot or French press; set aside for later steeping with the spices.
  2. Simmer Spices: Break the cinnamon stick into smaller pieces and peel and thinly slice the ginger root. Add the cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and water to a small pot. Heat over medium-high until the mixture simmers, then reduce the heat slightly and allow it to simmer for 3 minutes to release the spices’ flavors.
  3. Steep Tea with Spices: Carefully pour the hot spiced water over the tea in the teapot or French press. Let the tea and spice mixture steep together for 5 minutes to create a rich, aromatic blend.
  4. Strain and Serve: Strain the mixture into a mug to remove all solids including tea leaves and spices. Stir in the fresh lemon juice and honey until fully dissolved and blended.
  5. Garnish and Enjoy: Optionally, garnish the hot toddy with a lemon slice and a cinnamon stick. Serve immediately while warm for a cozy, comforting experience.

Notes

  • Adjust the honey amount to taste depending on your preferred sweetness level.
  • Use fresh ginger for the best flavor; dried ginger can be substituted but with less intense flavor.
  • This drink is suitable as a soothing remedy for colds or to warm up during cold weather.
  • Ensure to strain well to avoid biting into whole spices or tea leaves.
  • Can be made with herbal tea for a caffeine-free version.
