Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2½ cups (315g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Optional: ½ teaspoon black pepper or paprika
Wet Ingredients
- 1¾ cups (415ml) buttermilk
- ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted (for the pan)
Other Ingredients
- ½ lb (225g) ground breakfast sausage (mild or spicy)
- 1½ cups (150g) shredded cheddar cheese (or a cheese blend)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Place the butter in your baking dish and put it in the oven to melt while it preheats, ensuring the butter melts without browning.
- Cook the Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground breakfast sausage, breaking it up into crumbles, until fully browned and no longer pink. Drain excess grease and let it cool slightly.
- Make the Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and optional black pepper or paprika. Pour in the buttermilk and stir gently until just combined, being careful not to overmix. Fold in the cooked sausage and shredded cheese until evenly distributed, resulting in a thick, slightly sticky dough.
- Assemble and Bake: Remove the baking dish with melted butter from the oven. Spoon or spread the dough evenly into the hot butter, pressing it gently to the edges. Lightly score the top into 9 squares to make cutting easier after baking. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Serve Warm: Let the biscuits rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing and serving. These biscuits are best enjoyed warm but remain delicious at room temperature.
Notes
- For added flavor, consider sprinkling extra cheese on top before baking.
- You can use spicy sausage for a kick or mild sausage if preferred.
- Make sure not to overmix the dough to keep the biscuits tender.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and reheated in the oven to maintain tenderness.
- If buttermilk is unavailable, substitute with milk mixed with a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar.
