Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil (or melted shortening)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Add the vegetable oil and warm water, then stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 3–4 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let rest for 30 minutes.
- Shape and Cook: Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and roll each into a ball. Roll each ball into a thin circle on a floured surface. Cook each tortilla in a hot skillet until bubbles form and light brown spots appear.
- Serve: Keep warm in a clean towel until ready to serve.
Notes
- For softer tortillas, cover them with a towel immediately after cooking to retain moisture.
- These can be made ahead and reheated in a dry skillet or microwave.
- For whole wheat tortillas, substitute half the flour with whole wheat flour.
