Description

Grandma’s Onion Squares are a savory baked treat featuring caramelized onions blended into a fluffy batter and baked to golden perfection. This comforting dish combines the sweetness of slow-cooked onions with a tender crumb, optionally enhanced with cheddar cheese and fresh parsley for garnish. Perfect as a snack, side dish, or appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale

Onion Mixture

  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons butter

Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup grated cheddar cheese (optional, for extra flavor)

Garnish

  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Make sure not to burn them. Once caramelized, remove from heat and set aside to cool completely.
  2. Prepare the Batter: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until well combined. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and add the milk, stirring until fully mixed. Stir the cooled caramelized onions and grated cheddar cheese (if using) into the wet mixture. Gradually combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, mixing gently until you achieve a smooth batter.
  3. Bake the Squares: Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish and pour the prepared batter into it. Spread evenly to ensure uniform baking. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Cool and Serve: Remove the baking dish from the oven and allow the onion squares to cool for a few minutes. Once slightly cooled, cut into squares. Optionally, garnish with fresh parsley before serving warm for the best flavor experience.

Notes

  • Caramelizing the onions slowly is key to developing the sweet and rich flavor characteristic of this dish.
  • Cheddar cheese is optional but adds a nice depth of flavor to the bread.
  • Use an 8×8-inch baking dish to get the right thickness and bake time.
  • Allow cooling slightly before slicing to get clean squares.
  • This dish can be served as a snack, side dish, or an appetizer.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
