Description

This easy and delicious Tater Tot Casserole provides a comforting meal combining browned ground meat with creamy mushroom soup, mixed vegetables, and crispy tater tots topped with melted cheddar cheese. Perfect for a family dinner, it’s simple to prepare and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey (or plant-based ground meat)
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)

Dairy and Soup

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Other

  • 1 bag (32 oz) frozen tater tots
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it reaches the optimal temperature for baking the casserole evenly.
  2. Cook Meat: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or turkey until browned thoroughly. Drain any excess fat to keep the dish from being greasy.
  3. Mix Soup and Vegetables: Stir the cream of mushroom soup and milk into the skillet with the cooked meat. Add the frozen mixed vegetables, and season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste, stirring well to combine.
  4. Assemble Casserole: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish lightly, then spread the meat and vegetable mixture evenly across the bottom. Layer the frozen tater tots on top, followed by an even sprinkling of shredded cheddar cheese.
  5. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted beautifully.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey with ground beef or a plant-based alternative depending on your dietary preference.
  • For extra creaminess, use whole milk, but any milk type will work.
  • Add your favorite seasonings such as garlic powder or paprika for extra flavor.
  • Make sure to drain fat after cooking meat to avoid excessive grease in the casserole.
  • Let the casserole rest for a few minutes after baking for easier serving.
