Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 pound ground beef
Spices and Seasonings
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Ground black pepper, to taste
- Garlic powder, to taste (optional)
Cheeses
- 2 cups grated Cheddar cheese
- 4 slices American cheese
Custard Mixture
- ½ cup Bisquick mix (or all-purpose flour for a firmer texture)
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3 large eggs
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare the pie plate: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a standard 9-inch pie plate thoroughly to prevent sticking.
- Cook onions and ground beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped onions until translucent. Add the ground beef, salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder. Cook until the beef is fully browned and cooked through, then drain excess fat if necessary. Spread the cooked beef and onions evenly into the greased pie plate.
- Layer with Cheddar cheese: Sprinkle the 2 cups of grated Cheddar cheese evenly over the layer of cooked beef and onions in the pie plate.
- Prepare custard mixture: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the Bisquick mix (or all-purpose flour), whole milk, and eggs until smooth and well combined. Pour this custard mixture gently over the meat and cheese layer in the pie plate.
- Bake until golden and set: Place the pie plate in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 25-30 minutes, or until the custard is fully set, firm to the touch, and the top is golden brown.
- Add American cheese and melt: Remove the pie from the oven and layer the 4 slices of American cheese evenly over the top. Return the pie to the oven and bake for an additional 3-5 minutes, or until the American cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Cool and serve: Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for about 5-10 minutes. Slice into portions and serve warm for a delicious, hearty meal.
Notes
- For a firmer crust-like texture, use all-purpose flour instead of Bisquick mix.
- Drain excess fat from the cooked ground beef to reduce greasiness in the pie.
- Feel free to add other seasonings such as paprika or Worcestershire sauce for extra flavor.
- This pie pairs well with a fresh green salad or steamed vegetables.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
