Description

Classic Ambrosia Salad is a creamy, fruity dessert salad combining whipped topping, sour cream, pineapple, mandarin oranges, mini marshmallows, shredded coconut, and Maraschino cherries. This chilled salad is perfect for potlucks, picnics, or holiday gatherings, offering a blend of sweetness and texture with a refreshing tropical flair.

Ingredients

Scale

Salad Base

  • 8 oz whipped topping, thawed (e.g., Cool Whip brand)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

Fruit & Add-ins

  • 1 can (20 oz) pineapple chunks, drained
  • 1 can (11 oz) mandarin oranges, drained
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup Maraschino cherries, halved (plus more for garnish, if desired)

Instructions

  1. Mix the creamy base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sour cream and whipped topping until well mixed to create a smooth and creamy base for the salad.
  2. Add the fruit and mix-ins: Add the drained pineapple chunks, mandarin oranges, mini marshmallows, shredded coconut, and halved Maraschino cherries to the creamy base.
  3. Fold gently: Carefully fold all the ingredients together ensuring everything is evenly coated with the creamy mixture without breaking up the fruit.
  4. Chill: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate the salad for at least 2 hours or preferably overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the salad to chill thoroughly.
  5. Garnish and serve: When ready to serve, optionally garnish the salad with additional Maraschino cherries for extra color and sweetness, then serve chilled.

Notes

  • For best flavor, let the salad chill overnight so the ingredients fully meld.
  • Use canned fruit packed in juice (not syrup) for a less sweet result if preferred.
  • You can substitute sour cream with Greek yogurt for a tangier flavor and added protein.
  • This recipe is perfect for making ahead of time and storing in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Garnish right before serving to keep the cherries bright and fresh-looking.
