Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 2-quart baking dish to prevent sticking during baking.
- Sauté Cabbage & Onion: In a large pan over medium heat, melt 8 tablespoons of butter. Add the chopped cabbage and Vidalia onion to the pan.
- Cook Vegetables: Sauté the cabbage and onion for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently until the cabbage softens. Season the mixture with salt and pepper according to your taste.
- Transfer to Baking Dish: Once the cabbage and onion are softened and seasoned, transfer the mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
- Mix and Add Creamy Topping: In a bowl, combine the cream of chicken (or mushroom) soup with the mayonnaise until smooth. Spread this creamy mixture evenly over the cabbage and onion layer in the baking dish.
- Prepare Cheese Topping: In a separate small bowl, mix the 3 tablespoons of melted butter with the shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Evenly sprinkle this cheesy butter mixture on top of the casserole.
- Bake the Casserole: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the topping is bubbly and golden brown.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before serving to let the flavors settle.
